Irmo Town Council Meeting – November 18

The Irmo Town Council held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 18 at 6 p.m. in the municipal building.

Historic police vehicle donated to the town

Brian Peña, Sensei of the Karate Dojo, presented town council with a classic 1980 Volkswagen Rabbit that once served as one of four patrol cars for the Irmo Police Department in the 1980s. The diesel-powered vehicle has been in Peña’s possession for the past four years and has only been publicly displayed a handful of times.

“I want this vehicle to have the respect it’s earned,” Peña said. “It’s a historical part of the Irmo culture.”

Gas shortages in the early 1980s prompted then–Irmo Police Chief Jerry Cameron to purchase the Rabbit patrol vehicles. Their fuel efficiency resulted in significant cost savings for the department.

Peña handed the keys and title to Mayor Bill Danielson, officially transferring ownership of the “small but mighty” vehicle to the Town of Irmo.

Former Police Chiefs Brian Buck, Courtney Dennis and Ray Nash attended the presentation. “We took down all the muscle cars of that era with these little Rabbits,” said retired Police Chief Ray Nash, who served as chief in 1983 at just 23 years old. “I feel quite privileged to be part of that Irmo history.”

Current Irmo Police Chief Bobby Dale presented Peña with an honorary Irmo Police Department badge in appreciation of his contributions over the years.

Confidentiality ordinance receives first reading approval

Council gave first reading approval to a new ordinance that makes it unlawful for town officers—elected or appointed—or town employees to disclose confidential information to third parties, including information discussed during executive session.

“This is something we should be following all along,” said Councilwoman Dr. Barb Waldman.

“This is another of our general housekeeping amendments moving forward,” added Town Administrator Jim Crosland. “Confidentiality is essential to a lot of the businesses that we are dealing with.”

December workshop date changed

Council voted to move its December workshop from December 2 to December 9 due to the town’s Christmas tree lighting scheduled for December 2.

Project bids deferred; recycling cans approved

Council deferred discussion and approval of a bid to repair the Town Hall sidewalk and install water fountains at Rawls Creek Park until the December 9 workshop.

The town approved the purchase of new recycling cans totaling $6,751.39.
