Literacy SC has launched a new class that will help give families the ability to sign their names with confidence. Signature Ready: Confident Cursive, runs once weekly February 25 to April 1 and provides a supportive environment, face-to-face instruction, and all the tools to master signing your name in cursive.
While cursive has largely faded from modern school curriculum, the handwritten signature remains a vital tool for personal independence. Whether signing a lease, a voter registration card, or a bank document, a confident signature is often the final step in a significant life transaction.
“There is a profound sense of pride that comes with ‘signing off’ on your own future,” said Lisa Cole, CEO of Literacy SC and West Columbia native. “Signature Ready will give Columbia families more refined motor skills to confidently navigate life.”
The six-week family course is hosted in-person at WellWithin Martial Arts, located at 1801 Gervais Street in downtown Columbia. An adult and child must attend all six classes together. This structure lets families learn and write side by side, providing a supportive space to develop a skill that remains a fundamental requirement for legal and professional documentation.
“Even in a digital world, a signature still matters in meaningful ways,” said Meredith Gvozdas, instructor of Signature Ready. “This program gives families with the confidence and skills to sign their names proudly, knowing they can fully participate in life’s most important moments, without hesitation.”
Registration for the Spring 2026 cohort of Signature Ready is now open. To help the program remain accessible to local families, the $100 enrollment fee covers one adult plus one child attending together for the full six-week course. Each family will receive one Signature Kit, a tote packed with all supplies for the full course at their first class. Seats are limited.
