Local teams add wins

While Irmo had a vacant date last week, Dutch Fork and Chapin varsity football teams added victories to their current winning streaks.

After putting the season-opening loss behind them, the Eagles improved to 3-1 for the season with last week’s shutout against the visiting Newberry Bulldogs. Against the Bulldogs it was a 38-0 win making it the second shoutout in their three-game winning streak.

Putting down rival Mid-Carolina 45-0 two weeks ago was the first.

Chapin led 21-0 at halftime in last week’s home game, and then finished it with an additional 17 points in the second half while holding the Bulldogs scoreless throughout the game.

Sophomore quarterback Brady Albro completed 16 of 21 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns (TD’s), while sophomore Clayton Sondgeroth led the team in pass receptions for 88 yards and two TD’s, and senior Grady Brandstatter also got it into the end zone with a single pass reception.

Another six Eagles recorded from one to three pass receptions through the game.

At ground level senior Wyatt Bland led the attack with 11 carries and one TD, followed by senior Nolan Beerman with eight carries and a touchdown.

Vince Santostefano added seven points with four PAT’s and a field goal, while Hayden Burris put in another point with a good PAT.

On defense, Burris and Brock Reeves each recorded a sack, and 80 tackles were scattered throughout the Chapin defense, with 15 throwing the Bulldogs for a loss.

Meanwhile, Dutch Fork’s Silver Foxes upped their winning streak to four, with no losses, when they beat Stratford 64-21 in another road game last week.

Dutch Fork led 23-0 after the first half, and added 35 points in the third quarter and six in the fourth to finish it off. In some respects, it appeared to be a little messy with numerous fumble recoveries and returns for a TD for the Foxes, kickoff returns for a TD for both teams, along with turnovers and penalties, most on the Knights’ side of the ball.

This week Dutch Fork will visit North Augusta, Chapin will play at Brookland-Cayce and Irmo returns to action with a home game against Hartsville. All games Friday at 7:30 pm.
