Luke Sevilla secures 300th win in wrestling

Rising multi-sport athlete Luke Sevilla of Irmo achieved a milestone by securing his 300th career wrestling victory at this year’s Carolina Invitational Middle School State Wrestling Championships.

Representing Irmo Middle School, Luke was the only boys’ wrestler from the program to qualify for the event.

Sevilla scored two victories before a controversy — subsequently reported to the SCHSL — cost him a chance at this year’s State Title.

Luke has recorded more than 20 wins this season, following up a 2023-2024 campaign where he claimed the 2024 SCYWA State Wrestling Championship and the USA Wrestling State Championship of South Carolina.

Competing for the Irmo Kingpins Wrestling Club, Luke is coached by his father, Tommy Sevilla.

Beyond middle school competition, Luke tested his abilities against older opponents, defeating high school wrestlers in exhibition matches during dual meets this season. Luke is also the 2024 Silver Gloves Boxing Champion and was recently crowned the 2025 Carolina Gloves Boxing Champion in the 12-13-year-old Novice Division at 145 pounds.

A true multi-sport athlete, Luke Sevilla is the starting catcher for the Irmo High School B Team and a football player for Irmo High School. Luke led the Irmo Football C Team in rushing yards gained, passing yards, touchdowns scored, total scoring, receptions, total all-purpose yardage, catches, yards after catch, and first downs. Luke started one game at the position during the season. In that game — against Grey Collegiate — Luke was informed seconds before kickoff that he would be starting at quarterback. With no proper warm-up and using another player’s helmet, he threw for more than 300 yards, rushed for more thn 100 yards, and accounting for both of the team’s touchdowns.

Luke is also a California travel ball baseball all-star who has played in the Travel Ball World Series in San Diego, California, and competed against an All-Star team from Japan. Though he loves basketball, his year-round sports commitments have only allowed him to participate in recreation leagues.

Luke is a 13-year-old Mexican American standout who stands 6’0″ tall and weighs 150 lbs. His father, Tommy Sevilla, was also a multi-sport athlete in high school and has coached Luke throughout his life, while also introducing him mentors.

Luke’s wrestling mentor is Steve Glassey, former Cal State Fullerton wrestler. Glassey is the founder and operator of Camp of Champions Wrestling Camps, the longest-running wrestling camp system in the United States. Luke will be attending Glassey’s seven-day wrestling camp in Big Bear, California, June 22 of this year, reuniting with his coach for the first time in nearly two years. Luke’s wrestling career has been marked All-American honors with NUWAY and RMN and a runner-up finish at the 2023 California SCWAY State Championships.
