Irmo Middle School 7th Grader, Luke Sevilla, clinched the South Carolina SCYWA State Wrestling Championship on March 2 at the South Carolina Youth Wrestling Association (SCYWA) State Championships. Competing in the 12u – 140 lb Open Division at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, Sevilla remained undefeated throughout the day, defeating opponents from Ninety-Six, Swansea, Gaston, and Summerville.
Sevilla’s exceptional performance adds to his wrestling achievements, having been the 2024 Area Wrestling Champion and 2024 Section Wrestling Champion at 126 pounds for Irmo Middle School in the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL). Despite having to withdraw from the recent SCHSL Carolina Invitational Middle School State Championships due to health issues, Luke has maintained an impressive record of 26-0 at 126 lbs in the SCHSL. He also earned NUWAY Wrestling All-American status in 2024, marking his second time achieving this recognition in his three-year wrestling career.
Sevilla’s younger sister – Grace Sevilla – a Nursery Road 5th Grader, went 2-2 on the day and placed 3rd at this year’s State Wrestling Championships in the 105/115 10u Girls Division.
In addition to his wrestling prowess, Luke Sevilla is a multi-sport athlete, serving as a starter on the Irmo B Team Baseball Squad and participating in the IMS C Team Football. He is also a 2024 South Carolina Silver Gloves State Champion Boxer. Alongside his wrestling endeavors, Luke will attend THE ZOO National Youth Football Recruiting Showcase in Southern California on March 10.
Caleb Casillas, an IMS Wrestler and 7th Grader, achieved Runner-Up status at the SCYWA Rookie State Championships and secured 4th Place at the March 2 Open Division State Championships. Coached by IMS Wrestling Coach Tommy Sevilla, both Luke Sevilla and Caleb Casillas are set to compete at the South Carolina AAU State Wrestling Championships in Greer on March 16.
