Dwight Anthony Powell, 42, of Saluda, has been convicted in Lexington County General Sessions Court after a trial. Powell was found guilty by a Lexington County jury of Burglary – Second Degree (violent) and Attempted Grand Larceny, with a value exceeding $10,000. Circuit Court Judge Walton J. McLeod IV sentenced Powell to eight years in prison.
The prosecution of this case was led by Eleventh Circuit Deputy Solicitor Angela G. Martin and Assistant Solicitor Kyle Smith, with the investigation conducted by the Irmo Police Department.
The burglary occurred on the morning of Tuesday, November 10, 2020, when an Irmo attorney discovered that his garage and storage building behind his business on Woodrow Street had been burglarized. Valuable items, including an antique bed, were stolen from the building, and a lock from the garage area was removed. Additionally, a convertible Maserati, valued at over $15,000, was stored in the structure.
Through the diligent efforts of Sgt. Kelly Mountzorous of the Irmo Police Department, latent fingerprints were lifted from the car window. Analysis by SLED identified two individuals, including Powell, as leaving those prints at the crime scene. The investigation revealed that Powell and a cooperating co-defendant attempted to steal the Maserati but were unsuccessful in starting the vehicle.
During the sentencing hearing, the State presented evidence of Powell’s multiple prior criminal convictions. He will now be transferred to the South Carolina Department of Corrections to begin serving his sentence.
