MUSC Health Donates Life-Saving Devices to Richland County Deputies

MUSC Health is teaming up with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department to help save lives. On July 9, the health system donated 14 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) during a press conference held at MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Downtown.

These AEDs will be placed in patrol cars throughout Richland County, giving deputies the ability to respond faster during cardiac emergencies—often before EMS crews arrive.

“At MUSC Health, our mission is to preserve and improve life across South Carolina,” said Matthew Littlejohn, CEO of MUSC Health in the Midlands. “By placing AEDs in the hands of deputies, we’re providing them with a powerful tool that can make a life-or-death difference in the field.”

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott expressed gratitude for the donation.

“Seconds matter when someone is having a cardiac emergency,” Lott said. “These AEDs give our deputies the ability to act quickly and potentially save lives. We’re thankful to MUSC Health for being a true partner in public safety.”

The initiative is part of MUSC Health’s larger effort to strengthen community health and improve emergency response by working closely with law enforcement and first responders.
