Irmo has new process for renewing business licenses.
The Town of Irmo is implementing a new procedure when renewing a business license. In the past a business would fill out the one page application form and enter gross earnings for the year with no proof necessary. This year some form of proof is needed showing the gross income of the business.
“This is not unheard of,” said Town Administrator Courtney Dennis. “We are complying with the Business License Standardization Act from 2020 that was passed by the General Assembly where it states that we can ask for proof of earnings.”
The town adopted the standardization act in 2022 but this is the first year with the new requirement.
The standardization act was passed to ensure consistency across a wide variety of categories for licensing and was a requirement that the town had to adopt.
“We’ve had substantial growth in the town and we need more accountability,” Dennis said. “We rely on the accuracy of our revenues so we need to be sure we’re treating everyone fairly.”
A new business is not required a proof of income and the town’s licensing specialist welcomes any calls about procedure.
“You can bring in last year’s tax return, a CPA audit, or any other documents that show gross earnings,” said Dennis.“We’re not trying to make this difficult,.”
