School District Five and the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission (ICRC) have teamed up to launch the Bridge Development League, a new youth sports program designed to help middle school students develop athletic skills, sportsmanship, and school pride.
The Bridge Development League serves children ages 9–14 and focuses on preparing athletes for higher levels of competition by teaching sport-specific skills, game rules, and expectations. Basketball will serve as the pilot sport this winter, open to both boys and girls ages 11–14.
Registration is now open through November 6, and participants will represent their zoned school—Irmo, Chapin, or Dutch Fork—wearing team jerseys in official school colors and logos.
League games and practices will be held at ICRC and School District Five facilities. The season fee is $90, and scholarships are available to ensure that all interested children can participate.
“We’re so happy to partner with School District Five on the Bridge Development League,” said Jason White, ICRC Operations Superintendent. “This initiative gives all children new opportunities to play sports for their school with quality coaching, while at the same time making the transition from elementary to middle school easier on students and parents.”
In addition to promoting athletic development, youth sports have been shown to improve children’s overall well-being—helping reduce anxiety and depression, boost mood and confidence, enhance social and life skills, and even improve academic performance.
Caregivers can contact ICRC at Seven Oaks (803-772-3336) or Crooked Creek (803-345-6181) for registration and schedule details, or visit www.icrc.net for more information.
