Noisy Sunday in the Midlands

Residents across the Midlands experienced an unusually loud Sunday afternoon on March 1, 2026, as multiple events combined to create noticeable shaking and booming throughout the region.

Earthquake Near Irmo

A 2.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded approximately 3 miles due west of Irmo, producing a noticeable rumble felt by many residents. According to regional seismic reports, this was the fifth quake near Lake Murray so far this year. Across the state, there have been 13 earthquakes reported in South Carolina in 2026, following 35 total quakes reported statewide in 2025.

Military Training Noise

In addition to the seismic event, Fort Jackson conducted three controlled explosions on its training grounds Sunday afternoon, producing loud booms throughout the area.

The noise was further amplified by the South Carolina National Guard conducting ordnance detonations at the McCrady Training Center. Officials say similar training operations are expected to continue through the next three days.

Residents across the Midlands reported both the tremors and booms to local media and social channels, with many initially unsure of the source before official confirmation of the quake and military activity.

While earthquakes of this magnitude are relatively minor, the combination of seismic activity and scheduled military detonations made for an especially noisy Sunday. If you felt the ground shake or heard loud booms, you were not alone — it was a very active afternoon across the region.
