Optimist Club Hears Update on Palmetto Place Programs and Impact

IRMO, SC — On May 23, the Optimist Club of St. Andrews-Irmo welcomed Heather Turner, Interim Executive Director of Palmetto Place, to share updates on the organization’s mission and the powerful impact it continues to make in the lives of vulnerable youth across the Midlands.

For years, the Optimist Club has supported Palmetto Place, not only financially but also through hands-on volunteer work and mentorship. Turner’s presentation highlighted how that partnership has contributed to the growth and success of the organization’s life-changing programs.

A Safe Haven for Youth in Crisis
Palmetto Place provides a secure and supportive environment for youth who have experienced abuse, neglect, abandonment, or homelessness. Many arrive suddenly due to dangerous home situations, and the first priority is helping them regain a sense of calm and stability.

Once stabilized, each youth receives an individualized plan focused on three pillars of growth:

  • Productivity: Residents engage in high school, adult education, work, or volunteering for 35 hours per week.
  • Life Skills: Youth receive training in day-to-day routines like budgeting, cooking, home maintenance, and job preparation.
  • Financial Literacy: After securing employment, clients deposit 60% of their earnings into savings accounts managed by Palmetto Place. These funds are returned to them upon completing the program, helping them build financial security for their next chapter.

St. Andrews Optimist members play a key role in the financial literacy programming, sharing practical knowledge and personal life stories in small-group settings with residents.

Facilities That Support Growth
Palmetto Place operates three housing programs tailored to youth needs:

  • The Oaks: A 20-bed facility for unaccompanied youth ages 15–21.
  • Samantha’s Home: A 9-bed residence helping 18–21-year-olds transition to independent living.
  • Scattered Housing: Two smaller homes offering single-occupancy spaces for focused support.

In addition, Palmetto Place provides aftercare support for up to a year after youth leave the program.

Real Results in 2024
Turner shared encouraging statistics from the current year:

  • 196 youth served
  • 90% of participants achieved positive outcomes
  • 6 learner’s permits and 5 driver’s licenses earned

In addition to mentoring and education, Optimist Club members have also contributed to the upkeep of the facilities, pitching in with painting, carpentry, and general repairs.

The ongoing partnership between Palmetto Place and the St. Andrews-Irmo Optimist Club exemplifies how community collaboration can help young people overcome difficult beginnings and build successful futures.
