The Optimist Club of St. Andrews-Irmo welcomed Dean Widener, a candidate for the State House of Representatives District 89, as the guest speaker at their breakfast meeting on May 24.
Widener, who describes himself as a non-politician willing to serve, shared his journey from political sidelines to candidacy, encouraged by his wife to become a difference-maker. A veteran with 39 years in the U.S. Air Force, Widener now runs a life and health insurance business that caters to National Guard soldiers and airmen nationwide.
During his address, Widener outlined the core values that he promises to uphold if elected:
- Integrity: Conducting oneself with honesty and strong moral principles, even when no one is watching.
- Service Before Self: Prioritizing constituents over party lines and being open to compromise as long as the constituents’ needs are met first.
- Excellence in All You Do: Setting high standards while remaining open to improvement and refinement.
Widener also emphasized his commitment to maintaining accessibility, ensuring that constituents’ issues are addressed promptly and effectively. Additionally, he expressed strong support for implementing term limits.
At the conclusion of his presentation, Widener was presented with a copy of the Optimist Creed, symbolizing the club’s appreciation for his visit and his values.
