On November 3, the St. Andrews Optimists welcomed Andrew Coston, the founder of the Midlands Gaming Coalition, as their speaker. This coalition stands as the pioneer in introducing the first “E-sports” program in the history of South Carolina.
Operating in the Greater Columbia area, the Midlands Gaming Coalition aims to unite video gamers of all ages through group competitions. While gaming traditionally takes place in the isolation of one’s home, the advent of internet capabilities has allowed players to engage in one-on-one or group competitions with participants worldwide.
Recognizing the potential solitary nature of gaming, Andrew Coston adopts a unique approach through tournaments. These events bring competitors together in one physical space, fostering a sense of camaraderie. The socialization that occurs during these tournaments can have enduring positive effects on the gamers involved. Key principles such as strategic thinking, respect for opponents, communication, sportsmanship, team building, etiquette during competition, and learning to win or lose with humility are emphasized.
According to Coston, gaming has become a mainstream phenomenon, with almost every young person engaging in it to some extent. The Midlands Gaming Coalition goes beyond competitions and has introduced a summer gaming camp, which has experienced remarkable growth. However, one of the challenges faced by the organization is ensuring an adequate number of volunteer coaches for the participants. Current enrollment records indicate a core group of approximately 60 gamers.
To facilitate the participants, the coalition provides all necessary gaming hardware and internet access. For more information, interested individuals can visit midlandsgaming.org. The Midlands Gaming Coalition continues to shape the gaming landscape, promoting not only competition but also socialization and positive values among gamers.
