Playoffs get under way

Varsity basketball playoffs are about to get started with some local District Five teams right in the middle of it.

IRMO

IRMO’S VARSITY GIRLS will kick it off tomorrow, Friday, when they visit Westside (16-2) for their first-round challenge on the road. The Yellow Jackets (12-5, 7-3) are playing as the No. 2 seed from Region 4-4A, while the Westwood Redhawks (10-3, 8-1) play as the region’s winner.

This first round game takes place one day earlier than other Class 4A girls games, which start Saturday, February 20.

The winner of the Irmo/Westside game will advance to the second round on February 24 against either Greenville or Catawba Ridge.

The IRMO VARSITY BOYS (11-5, 8-1) will also play as the No. 2 seed from the region, with A. C. Flora (10-1, 6-1) playing as the No. 1 seed by South Carolina High School League rules after a tiebreaker game between the two was canceled recently.

Irmo opens the playoffs February 22 at Travelers Rest (17-3, 7-1), with the winner advancing to round two on February 25 against Greenville or a Region 3-4A opponent.

DUTCH FORK

DUTCH FORK’S VARSITY GIRLS (8-4, 5-3) play as the No. 2 seed from Region 5-5A, just behind Lexington (7-3, 6-2).

The Silver Foxes will be on the road to take on (7-0, 4-0) Monday in the first round, with the winner advancing to Wednesday’s second round.

The Silver Fox Varsity Boys could have won Region 5-5A with a victory against Chapin Wednesday, but also would have set up a tiebreaker between Dutch Fork and River Bluff if Chapin’s Eagles had won.

Either way Dutch Fork and River Bluff will be the No’s. 1 and 2 seeds in the playoffs from Region 5-5A.
