Publix Math Night Excites Harbison West Elementary School Families

Harbison West Elementary School organized a Publix Math Night on February 1, 2024, to engage students and their families in real-world math activities at Publix, a local grocery store. The event aimed to demonstrate the practical applications of math and foster a love for the subject.

During the event, students, accompanied by their families, participated in various math activities throughout the store. Publix, as a community partner, added a sweet touch to the night by providing attendees with treats from the bakery. The highlight of the evening was the chance to take pictures with Plato, the Publix dinosaur. Two lucky families also won gift cards, generously provided by Publix.

Harbison West Assistant Principal Sarah Fischer expressed enthusiasm about the event, emphasizing its significance in showcasing real-world applications of math. The school aims to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and the practical use of math in students’ daily lives, fostering a deeper appreciation for the subject.

Principal Dr. Thomas Turner highlighted the school’s broader goal of encouraging every student to “Be the Hero of Your Story.” As students enhance their mathematical understanding, they move closer to achieving this goal. Dr. Turner commended the dedicated teachers for promoting high-quality math instruction daily and expressed gratitude for the partnership with Publix, which allowed the school to extend its classroom beyond its walls.
