A Push-In ceremony was held on Monday, August 28, for the brand-new Engine 172 at the Northlake location of the Irmo Fire District.
Firemen gathered together to push the new engine into its stall as was and still is a tradition from the past. The tradition goes back to horse-drawn fire equipment in the 1800s when crews returned from a call. The horses couldn’t back the carts into the bay so the fireman would detach the horses and push the equipment into the stall themselves. After motorization, the tradition remains to honor the firefighting crews of the past by pushing in the new vehicles.
