Rawls Creek Park hosts ribbon cutting

The grand opening of Rawls Creek Park on October 18 marked a significant addition to the Irmo community. Located at 1113 Friarsgate Boulevard, this $2 million recreational facility includes a community garden, two dog parks, a skate park, a walking trail, and a basketball court, all enclosed within a gated area. The park is open daily from 7 am to 10 pm.

Mayor Bill Danielson highlighted the park’s value, not just for its amenities but also for its role as a community gathering place. He acknowledged former Mayor Barry Walker, Sr., for his efforts in initiating the project.

The park’s development took nearly four years, with construction completed in multiple phases: starting with the community garden, followed by the dog parks, and culminating with the skate park. It also features a public restroom, sidewalks, lighting, and parking, making it a comprehensive recreational space for the community.

Park Features:

  • Community Garden: Provides a space for residents to grow plants and interact with neighbors.
  • Dog Park: Includes separate areas for large and small dogs, equipped with benches, waste stations, and shaded spots.
  • Skate Park: An 8,500-square-foot space suitable for skaters of all skill levels, with street-style and bowl features.
  • Walking Trail: A quarter-mile shaded trail that winds through the park.
  • Basketball Court: An area for shooting hoops and playing pickup games.

Future Additions:

The park plans to introduce a covered pavilion, pergola, playground, artistic mural, and hydration stations for dogs in the coming years.

Rawls Creek Park not only serves the 3,000 children living in the nearby Friarsgate neighborhood but also showcases the headwaters of Rawls Creek, which flows into the Saluda River. The park stands as a testament to the town’s investment in community recreation and environmental preservation.
