Richland County Issues Guidelines for Clearing Storm Debris

Many residents in Richland County are still dealing with fallen trees, branches, and yard debris left behind by Hurricane Helene. The County’s Public Works Department has been actively clearing roadways and is now working with curbside collection contractors to assist with storm debris removal.

Curbside collection will follow the regular yard waste guidelines, which include:

  • Only organic materials are accepted.
  • No dirt, sand, mulch, or rocks.
  • Tree limbs must be no longer than 4 feet and no thicker than 4 inches in diameter.
  • Waste should not exceed the equivalent of two 96-gallon roll carts or six yard waste bags per week.

Residents using landscaping services to clear debris should ensure that contractors properly dispose of large quantities of waste. For those handling their own cleanup, yard waste can be dropped off at the Richland County C&D Landfill located at 1070 Caughman Road N., Columbia.

For larger limbs and brush that do not meet weekly curbside collection limits, residents should place debris roadside, at least 6 feet away from regular yard waste piles, roll carts, or other objects to allow for easy removal. These items will be picked up by the County’s Public Works crews.
