One of South Carolina’s most spectacular natural events is underway as hundreds of thousands of Purple Martins have returned to Bomb Island on Lake Murray for their annual summer roost.
Members and guests of the Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo recently enjoyed an evening boat excursion to Bomb Island, where they witnessed the birds arriving just before sunset. The gathering provided Rotarians with an opportunity to experience one of the largest Purple Martin roosts in North America while enjoying fellowship on Lake Murray.
As dusk approached, the sky filled with swirling flocks of Purple Martins as they performed their remarkable aerial display before settling into the trees that cover Bomb Island for the night. The spectacle attracts thousands of visitors each summer and has become one of the Midlands’ premier nature attractions.
Purple Martins, North America’s largest swallow, migrate thousands of miles each year from South America to breed across the eastern United States. Bomb Island serves as a communal roost from late June through early August, with peak populations often exceeding one million birds.
Rotary clubs regularly invite community leaders, educators, and business professionals to share their expertise with members. These programs reflect Rotary’s commitment to lifelong learning, ethical leadership, and service above self.
The Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo meets at 7:30 am on the first three Wednesdays of each month at the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission. Visitors interested in fellowship, networking, and community service are always welcome.
