Shepherd’s Center Launches Free Community Speaker Presentations

Columbia, S.C. – Curious minds, rejoice! The Shepherd’s Center of St. Andrews is now offering free, interactive presentations to local groups through its newly launched Speakers Bureau — and everyone’s invited to learn something new.

The Bureau connects seasoned presenters from the Center with local organizations for engaging talks rooted in lived experience, research, and personal passion. Presentations include dynamic PowerPoint visuals and cover a wide range of topics — from international diplomacy and Cold War espionage to pop music and ancient history.

The Speakers Bureau is free, with only basic tech needs (HDMI-compatible TV or projector and microphone if needed). It’s open to any interested group, including Rotary Clubs, senior centers, churches, libraries, neighborhood associations, service clubs, and retirement communities.

“This is lifelong learning in action,” said Dr. Carol McGinnis Kay, Distinguished Professor of English Emerita at USC-Columbia and former Shepherd’s Center president. “We’re sharing the knowledge and life stories of retired professors, counselors, business leaders, and world travelers — people who still have a lot to teach and inspire.”

Examples of presentations include:

  • The real double agent who inspired James Bond

  • Nine years negotiating nuclear contracts in China

  • The psychology behind 1950s–60s pop music

  • And many more

The Speakers Bureau grew out of the Shepherd’s Center’s successful Adventures in Learning program — three eight-week sessions offered annually, both in person at Ashland United Methodist Church (2600 Ashland Road, Columbia) and via Zoom. The next session runs September 16 through November 6.
