Storied Threads explores South Carolina’s textile legacy Sept. 3; Theater Arts Day engages students Sept. 27.
The South Carolina State Museum is celebrating creativity and culture next month with two special events highlighting the worlds of textiles, design, and performance.
On Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., the museum, in partnership with the Columbia Design League, will host Storied Threads: History, Artistry, and Innovation in South Carolina Textiles and Design. The evening begins with a panel discussion led by Laura Conte, the State Museum’s Curator of History. Panelists include:
-
Diko Pekdemir-Lewis, Creative Director and Owner of Anton & Maxine, Columbia Design League member
-
Kendra Johnson, Professor of Theatre at Clemson University
-
Kathy Phillips, Chief Curator of the Baxter Mill Archive
-
Virginia Theerman, Curator of Historic Textiles at the Charleston Museum
Following the discussion, guests can enjoy a light reception and visit the blockbuster exhibition Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume, created by the Walt Disney Archives. Tickets for Storied Threads are $28 for the general public and $21 for museum members, available now at scmuseum.org.
Later in the month, the museum will present Theater Arts Day on Friday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Designed for South Carolina students and school groups, the day will feature workshops, networking opportunities, and sessions for aspiring actors, writers, designers, and other theater professionals. State theater leaders will guide activities that introduce young artists to performance careers and creative opportunities.
Theater Arts Day is free, but advance registration is required by emailing [email protected]. Participants that day will also receive access to special discounted admission for Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume.
