The National Weather Center confirmed that an EF1 rated tornado touched down in Chapin on Monday, June 9 at 8:43pm. The tornado was spotted near Lake Tide Drive and was associated with 95 mph winds, torrential rains, heavy lightning, damaged power lines and toppled trees. It stayed on the ground for 6 minutes and travelled more than 6 miles. The width of the twister was 200 yards.
Strong storms came into the area around 7:30pm and a tornado warning was issued just before as a funnel cloud was seen on the northside of Lake Murray. Damage was reported near Sandbar Rd, Lake Tide Drive and Crooked Creek Park.
It’s track took it near the Peak exit off I-26 as it travelled east. It had crossed over Amicks Ferry Rd and was said to have originated near the peninsula near Caro Lane. More than 3,000 homes lost power and as of Tuesday afternoon some power had not yet been restored in Chapin.
No injuries had been reported due to the storm.
