IRMO – Two Dutch Fork High School students were detained Tuesday after school resource officers (SROs) received tips that they had brought firearms onto campus.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old had weapons in a vehicle they arrived in that morning. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two loaded firearms and a knife.
The 15-year-old faces multiple charges, including attempted carjacking, possession of a stolen vehicle, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime related to an incident earlier that morning. The 17-year-old was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds.
Dutch Fork High School Principal Dr. Gerald Gary addressed families, assuring them that no weapons were found inside the school building.
“School District Five’s top priority remains student and staff safety,” Dr. Gary stated. “We are committed to working with families, law enforcement, and community leaders to maintain safe learning environments.”
