Dr. Joel Campbell, representing USC’s Joseph F. Rice School of Law, spoke September 18 to the Optimist Club of St. Andrews-Irmo.

Dr. Campbell manages USC’s Family and Small Business Program. Its services are offered to interested parties at no charge.

 As a young boy, Dr. Campbell experienced a close-up practical education by observing a family friend who was a sole proprietor. As an adult he successfully created and ran a multi-state retail business.

The USC approach assists small businesses in studying an array of factors that they may or may not have considered. Some of those factors might include;

The reality of hard work

How essential it is to be present in the daily business operations; owning is one thing – operating is another.

How to manage problems/issues.

Valuing and developing employees.

If family owned, forming a plan of succession.

Organizing daily systems.

The fundamentals of licensing, permitting, and anticipating tax obligations.

While offering this service, USC Law is actively building actual case studies of small businesses to add to its body of knowledge.
