A water main break caused by a fiber optic installation company left residents of Murraywood subdivision without water last Wednesday. The break occurred on Willowbend Court when Lumos Fiber, while installing fiber optic lines, accidentally damaged the water main, leading to a sinkhole in front of Annette Briggs’ home.
“The road swelled and then collapsed in front of my driveway,” said Briggs. As the day progressed, the sinkhole expanded, causing further street damage.
In response, Lexington County Public Works issued a cease and desist order, halting Lumos Fiber’s operations in the county until a corrective action plan is provided. Lumos has also encountered similar issues in downtown neighborhoods, where their work has damaged gas lines.
While Lumos initially stated that no official stop-work order had been issued, the company announced a pause in operations in the affected area to collaborate with the water company and utilities to resolve the problem.
Repair efforts are now underway and are expected to continue for several weeks.
