Irmo wins again

By CT McDonald

The Yellow Jackets’ varsity football team has started this short season undefeated after two Region 4-4A games, and they will be headed to Memorial Stadium Friday to take on the only other undefeated team in the region, the A. C. Flora Falcons.

Irmo improved to 2-0, 2-0 with last week’s 14-0 win against Dreher, and, after this week’s game, will have just two more conference games on the agenda; Westwood (Westwood High school will reschedule its varsity football game against Irmo High School) and Lugoff-Elgin. Every region game counts toward qualification for the playoffs, and region teams play each other only once this year in their modified schedules.

The winner of this week’s Irmo/Flora game will take the lead in Region 4-4A in Week 3 of the football regular season, but others in the conference will be working in a tight race to take over that position in the final games of the schedule.

In addition to the remaining region games, Irmo will play Chapin and Aiken to round-out the season, with playoffs starting November 13.

State Swim Championship Meet

While many fall sports teams continue to play through their seasons, the State Swim Finals at the North Charleston Aquatic Center are coming up in the next few days.

Class 4A girls teams will compete Saturday starting at 2 pm, and the 4A boys teams will compete Monday on the same schedule.

Because of virus-related restrictions, there will be no spectators this year, but fans can view the meet on the NFHS Network at nfhsnetwork.com.
