Columbia Taking Entries for Smartphone Filmmaking Contest

Columbia Streams Art has officially opened submissions for the Columbia Cell-A-Brates Cinema smartphone filmmaking competition.

Entries must be uploaded through the submission gateway at mayor.columbiasc.gov/columbia-cell-a-brates-cinema-cellphone-competition by Wednesday, Oct. 8.

The competition is open to filmmakers of all skill levels, with films running three to ten minutes in length, shot entirely on a smartphone. All phone models are eligible.

While submissions can span any cinematic genre, organizers encourage uplifting stories and content that highlight:

  • Civic or community engagement

  • Personal growth, resilience, or creativity

  • Beautification and conservation efforts

  • Columbia’s history and stories

  • Knowledge and appreciation of local rivers—the Saluda, Broad, and Congaree

An independent jury of local filmmakers and film professionals will select the winners. Four cash prizes will be awarded: First Place, Second Place, Third Place, and Honorable Mention. A special prize will also be given for Best Use of Columbia’s Rivers and Public Outdoor Spaces.

Winning films will premiere during a red-carpet event Nov. 14 at Nickelodeon Theatre, with an encore matinee screening on Nov. 15.
