Lexington County Councilman Darrell Hudson has been honored as the 2024 Volunteer of the Year by the South Carolina Councils of Governments.
Hudson serves as Chair of the Central Midlands Area Agency on Aging’s Regional Aging and Disability Advisory Committee (RADAC), where he has been a strong advocate for improving the safety of seniors across the Midlands.
His work was sparked by a personal tragedy in 2019, when his mother went missing from an assisted living facility in Lexington County. The facility lacked security cameras, and Hudson later found his mother outside with a head injury. Shocked to learn that state law does not require cameras in nursing homes, Hudson took action.
He began pushing for legislation that would require cameras at all entrances and exits of senior care facilities. In 2020, Hudson helped pass a resolution urging the state legislature to adopt these camera requirements. In October 2024, the Central Midlands Council of Governments Board of Directors passed a similar resolution, and several local municipalities have since joined the cause.
Hudson’s leadership and persistence continue to bring awareness and legislative momentum to senior safety throughout South Carolina.
