District Five educators selected to become SC Financial Literacy Master

Lexington-Richland School District Five educators have once again demonstrated their commitment to financial literacy, with five teachers qualifying to become South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teachers. This year’s Bronze level cohort included 33 educators from across the state.

Among the newly recognized Master Teachers are Otisha Boyd-Robinson (Dutch Fork High), April Gaura (Oak Pointe Elementary), Miriam Hardy-Koverman (Piney Woods Elementary), Oleva Irvin (H. E. Corley Elementary), and Andrea McKnight (H. E. Corley Elementary). They will all be part of the program’s sixth cohort.

The South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teachers Program, launched in January 2020, aims to increase the number of educators incorporating personal finance education into their K-12 classrooms. To date, over 177 teachers have participated in the program.

State Treasurer Loftis extended his congratulations to the educators, stating, “I want to congratulate these hardworking educators for achieving Bronze certification and promoting financial literacy in their classrooms this year. The knowledge they have gained from this program is essential to preparing young students for the future. We value their efforts and wish them continued success as they move through the Master Teacher Program.”

Sponsored by Future Scholar, South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Plan, and in partnership with SC Economics, the program offers financial incentives, specialized training, and a curriculum designed to promote financial literacy education. Teachers then share these valuable tools and skills with their students.

To achieve South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher status, applicants must complete specific professional development classes, create and teach professional development training for their peers, and pass the W!SE Personal Finance Certification Test for Educators. This nationally recognized credential confirms an educator’s proficiency in teaching personal finance.

A key focus of the Master Teacher program is ensuring that financial literacy skills are imparted to both students and teachers alike. For more information, visit the SCFLMT website at scflmt.org.
