Dutch Fork Elementary School earns recertification as a Green Steps School

IRMO – Dutch Fork Elementary Academy of Environmental Sciences has earned recertification as a Green Step School through the Green Steps program.

Dutch Fork Elementary Academy of Environmental Sciences has been a certified Green Steps School for 11 years. They earned their recertification by establishing and maintaining model quality sustainability projects. There are three main project categories- Conserve, Protect, and Restore. Dutch Fork Elementary has worked with community mentors to successfully implement at least two projects in each of these categories.

“We are incredibly excited and proud to have received our recertification as a Green Steps Schools,” Principal Rebecca Dilley said. “At Dutch Fork Elementary School we are ‘All in…TOGETHER’ to ensure we are loving and growing our students, each other and taking care of the world we live in. Special thanks to our phenomenal Resident Scientist, Amy Umberger, our wonderful teachers and staff, and all of our mentors and volunteers. We are excited to have been able to refine and refresh our Academy of Environmental Sciences throughout this process. Our future is bright Fox Family!”

Dutch Fork Elementary Academy of Environmental Sciences is one of only three schools statewide to earn all four superlative awards for Conserve (2011), Protect (2021), Restore (2017) and Overall School of the Year (2018). The school also earned the first South Carolina National Green Ribbon School award in 2019.

The Green Steps program encourages individual schools in South Carolina to take annual steps toward becoming more environmentally responsible. Developed by Keep the Midlands Beautiful (KMB), Sonoco Recycling (SR) and DHEC’s Office of Recycling, Green Steps began in the 2003-2004 school year with seven Midlands schools participating.
