Financial Literacy program graduates District Five teachers

IRMO, SC — Two teachers from Lexington-Richland School District Five have been honored as recent graduates of the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program, a statewide initiative aimed at expanding personal finance education in K-12 classrooms.

Gayle Whitlock, a teacher at FIVE, and Jane Miller of Dutch Fork High School, were among just 14 educators across South Carolina to complete the program this year. Both were recognized during the 36th Annual Economics and Financial Literacy Awards Luncheon held recently in West Columbia.

The multi-year program, sponsored by Future Scholar (South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Plan) and SC Economics, helps teachers incorporate personal finance lessons into their curriculum. Participants receive professional training, classroom resources, and financial stipends as they progress through bronze, silver, and gold certification levels.

“I am pleased to congratulate our fourth graduating class of Financial Literacy Master Teachers,” said State Treasurer Curtis Loftis. “This unique program has helped inspire talented educators to strengthen their skills and confidence in promoting personal finance education… Each year we hear wonderful stories of how they’ve taken this new knowledge to create meaningful lessons that encourage their students and fellow educators to make wise financial decisions.”

In addition to using what they learn in the classroom, Master Teachers like Whitlock and Miller are also empowered to lead financial literacy training for fellow educators—expanding the reach of personal finance education throughout the state.
