The Irmo Town Council recognized Army veteran Jose Lopez at a town council meeting for his service to the country. To open the meeting, Jose also led the council in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Nominated by his wife, Erica Lopez, Jose’s life is a testament to resilience, bravery, and a commitment to serving others.
Military Service and Sacrifice
Jose served in the United States Army as a Humvee gunner during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In 2006, his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb. Jose suffered severe leg injuries, underwent multiple surgeries, and spent over a year recovering at Walter Reed Hospital. He continues to carry shrapnel from the incident today. For his sacrifice and bravery, Jose was awarded the Purple Heart before being medically discharged in 2008.
Continued Service to Irmo
Today, Jose serves as the School Resource Officer at Irmo Elementary School, ensuring a safe and secure environment for students and staff.
As a certified D.A.R.E. instructor, he teaches the 5th-grade curriculum, building meaningful connections and helping local students make positive life choices.
During the summer months, Jose continues his dedication to residents by patrolling the streets of the Town of Irmo for the Irmo Police Department.
“Whether he’s keeping the school safe, mentoring students, or simply showing kindness and consistency, he continues to serve with heart, and our community is better because of him,” said his wife Erica Lopez.
