Open Letter
Dear Editor,
I truly appreciate your publishing my open letter to Joe Wilson in your July 25 edition.
Giving space to those who disagreed with me in the following week’s paper — even if they offered no compelling arguments to rebut what I said – clearly demonstrates your commitment to fairness and balance. Not to mention the fact that you published a whole column from Joe Wilson earlier in the month.
I’m sorry you apparently lost a customer over this. I guess some people just don’t understand how letters to the editor (e.g., allowing people to publicly express differences of opinion) are supposed to work.
For what it’s worth, I received phone calls from complete strangers thanking me for writing that letter.
Hurrah for First Amendment freedoms. Hurrah for a free and independent press. Hurrah for the survival of professional journalism.
Kudos to the New Irmo News.
Thanks again.
