Irmo’s varsity boys basketball team is headed to the 4A Lower State Championship game this week after winning the quarterfinal round at home earlier in the week.
The Yellow Jackets (24-5) will take on Hartsville (14-13) at 7:30 pm at the Florence Civic Center on Friday in the semifinals, with the winner advancing to the 4A state finals on March 2 at the USC Aiken Convocation Center.
Irmo plays as the No. 1 seed in 4A lower state competition and the winner of Region 5-4A, while the Red Foxes are seeded at No. 11 with the No. 4 finish in Region 6.
Against Lucy Beckham, of Mt. Pleasant, in Monday’s third round at Irmo High School, the Yellow Jackets trailed the Bengals 8-5 after the first quarter, but then rallied to outscore the visitors 17-0 in the second period and lead the game all the way to the 59-34 win at the end.
Lucy Beckham (18-10) was the No. 4 lower state seed and finished the regular season in second place in Region 7-4A.
And while the Irmo Yellow Jackets are advancing deep into the varsity basketball playoffs with a shot at another state title game — and recording yet another season with more than 20 victories — the high school spring sports season is already in its early stages with teams competing in preseason tournaments and other games.
There is a lot more to come.
