IRMO – The Irmo High School LifeSmarts team has triumphed in the South Carolina state championship for the LifeSmarts Consumer Challenge, securing their place as state champions in the educational competition.
LifeSmarts, the nation’s premier consumer program, has been empowering students for 30 years by teaching them how to become responsible, knowledgeable consumers. The program is very relevant, offering real-world education to teens and rewarding them for their consumer knowledge.
LifeSmarts focuses on five key topic areas: consumer rights and responsibilities, the environment, health and safety, personal finance, and technology. Through a series of interactive challenges and competitions, students learn how to make informed decisions in these critical areas, developing the essential skills needed to navigate the complexities of today’s global marketplace.
The Irmo High team, made up of Matthew Blocker, Jayden Widmer, Gaines Roberts, Major Taylor, and Derrick Thompson, demonstrated exceptional teamwork and a thorough understanding of these vital topics to win the state championship. Their victory not only showcases their consumer savvy but also reflects their ability to think critically and apply their knowledge in practical scenarios.
The LifeSmarts program is designed to prepare young people for adult life, equipping them with the tools they need to make wise decisions about their finances, health, technology use, and environmental impact. By participating in the program, students gain valuable insights that will benefit them for years to come.
As state champions, the Irmo High team is now preparing to take their talents to the national stage. In April, they will travel to Chicago, Illinois, to compete in the national LifeSmarts championship.
Irmo High School Family and Consumer Science Teacher Tari Watson said, “Congratulations to Matthew, Jayden, Gaines, Major, and Derrick for their incredible achievement, and best of luck as they represent Irmo High School and South Carolina in the national competition!”
