Irmo High School Orchestra Program earns statewide performance honors

Irmo High School International School for the Arts Orchestra Program, under the direction of Colleen Marcou, earned the South Carolina Music Educators Association (SCMEA) Orchestra Division’s Outstanding Performance Award – SILVER for the 2021-2022 school year.

The Outstanding Performance Award (OPA) is the highest achievement for the orchestra programs in the state of South Carolina. To earn this award, Irmo High School’s orchestra program demonstrated a high level of proficiency in all areas of scholastic musicianship. Points were earned and accumulated through the school’s success in Region & All-State Orchestra, Concert Performance Assessment, and Solo & Ensemble. Less than 30 schools in the entire state qualified for this award.

“This year’s Irmo High School Orchestra students have gone above and beyond everything that I have asked of them,” Marcou said. “After two years of not being able to perform publicly, they showed how resilient they are and rose to their very best with their performances at the State Orchestra Concert Performance Assessment as well as in the Region and All-State Orchestras.  I could not be more proud of their hard work and excitement.  They are a true representation of the amazing Performing Arts Department at Irmo High School.”

The South Carolina Music Educators Association is a federated state association of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Their mission is to support and promote quality music education in South Carolina schools and communities.
