Irmo High School Sophomore Named National Finalist for Student Council Leadership Position

IRMO – Kaya Brunson, a sophomore at Irmo High School, has been selected as a national candidate for Vice President of Leadership Development in the upcoming National Student Council (NSC) elections, scheduled to take place April 20–30.

Brunson emerged from a highly competitive pool of applicants nationwide, with her application standing out for its strong demonstration of leadership, service, and vision for student engagement. She has already been notified of her candidacy and will move forward in the national election process alongside three other selected candidates, representing high schools from around the nation.

At Irmo High School, Brunson has built an impressive record of student leadership. She has been an active member of the student council for two years, serving first as Freshman Class President and currently as Sophomore Class President. In addition to her leadership roles, she is a varsity golfer, a “This is Escolares” Magnet student, and a member of both the Beta Club and the National Honor Society.

“It is a tremendous honor to be selected as one of the final candidates,” said Brunson. “I am passionate about serving my school and community, and I am excited for the opportunity to expand that impact on a national level.”

“Kaya’s selection as a national candidate is a reflection of her dedication, character, and ability to lead with purpose,” said Eric Coleman, Student Council Advisor at Irmo High School. “She consistently demonstrates a commitment to serving others and elevating student voices, and Irmo is incredibly proud to see her represent our school, district, and state on a national stage.”

Serving on the National Student Council provides students with opportunities to strengthen leadership skills, connect with peers and professionals across the country, and participate in national-level discussions and initiatives. Council members also gain firsthand experience engaging with leaders and institutions in Washington, D.C.

Brunson’s candidacy highlights both her individual achievements and the strong culture of leadership and support at Irmo High School. As the election approaches, she represents not only her school but also the broader student community with distinction.

The National Student Council is composed of student leaders from across the United States who serve as advocates for student voices at the national level.
