IRMO, S.C. — Students from Irmo High School recently claimed top honors at the South Carolina LifeSmarts Consumer Challenge, earning a spot on the national stage.
The competition, sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs, was held at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies in late February. It tests students’ knowledge in personal finance, consumer rights, technology, health, and environmental issues.
Irmo’s team won the state title, securing an invitation to represent South Carolina at the LifeSmarts National Competition, set for April 15–18 in Orlando.
Team members include captain Major Taylor, Antonio Spears, Hayden Applegate, Robert Lawrence, and Jayden Bales. The team is coached by Tari Watson, with Jeremy McMichael serving as assistant coach.
As state champions, the Irmo students will compete against top teams from across the country. They will also have opportunities to pursue sponsorships to support their trip.
“I am excited to be representing South Carolina this year,” Taylor said. “I believe in the LifeSmarts program and enjoy learning about topics I will encounter as an adult. This program has helped me become a more informed person. I am looking forward to seeing how we do at nationals.”
