Irmo Library staff honor 9/11

In the September 2021 Lexington County Library Board meeting, I asked to share pictures of the Irmo branch that highlighted the memorials for the victims of 9/11.

Several employees, Laurie Long, Judy Harris and Katherine Knibbs, created multiple displays throughout their branch to honor the 20th Anniversary of 9/11 and the lives that were lost on that day. They displayed a replica of the Flag of Honor that lists the names of everyone who perished on September 11, 2001 on each of the planes – at Shanksville, PA, the Pentagon and at the World Trade Center in New York City.

An interactive display gave patrons the opportunity to write a note to remember where they were on that day, and to share their thoughts from 9/11. Multiple displays included the printed names of all who were lost. Many books from the Lexington County Public Library collection on the subject were showcased throughout the branch and were available for patrons to check out. When asked what inspired them to create these displays, they smiled and said, “It was a labor of love.”

The Irmo community is very fortunate and blessed to have such a fine library with caring staff.
