IRMO — The Irmo Police Department has joined a new regional effort aimed at strengthening mental health support for officers through the “aRe yoU OK?” (R U OK) Initiative.
The program is a collaboration between The Haven SC and local law enforcement agencies, including the West Columbia Police Department and the Lexington Police Department. The initiative focuses on promoting officer wellness and encouraging open conversations about mental health.
As part of the effort, Irmo officers now have “R U OK” window clings displayed in every patrol vehicle, serving as a visible reminder to check in on one another both on and off duty.
Irmo Police Chief Bobby Dale recently joined fellow Midlands law enforcement leaders in a series of video messages aimed at reducing stigma and fostering dialogue around mental health in policing. Participating alongside Dale were Terrence Green and Marion Boyce. The videos, which include joint and individual messages as well as short-form social media clips, are expected to be released across various platforms in the coming days.
“This initiative is about creating a culture where it is not only acceptable, but encouraged, to ask for help,” Dale said. “Our officers face unique challenges every day, and it is our responsibility as leaders to ensure they know they are not facing those challenges alone.”
Organizers say the “aRe yoU OK?” campaign emphasizes connection, awareness, and early intervention. By normalizing conversations around mental health and providing visible reminders and resources, participating agencies aim to build a stronger culture of support within their departments.
The initiative reflects a broader commitment among Midlands law enforcement agencies to prioritize officer wellness, strengthen peer support systems, and lead by example. Community members can follow the Irmo Police Department on social media for updates and additional information.
