Jackson Massalon earns MCEC grant

Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative presented the Mid-Carolina Clean Energy Grant to Jackson Massalon for his innovation of a solar-powered speaker.

Massalon, a Chapin High student who takes his Clean Energy classes at District 5’s Center for Advanced Technical Studies, received the 2021 Mid-Carolina Electric Coopertive Clean Energy grant.

He used the grant to construct a compact, solar-powered speaker that can be used in any type of weather.

Massalon’s Clean Energy teacher is Patrick Smallwood. Every year Mid-Carolina is a donor to the District 5 Foundation that sponsors the awarding of student and teacher grants to support innovation in District 5 classrooms. This school year the District 5 Foundation sponsored 56 student grants and seven teacher grants.
