Irmo resident John Daniel Moorer was recently honored at South Carolina’s STEM Signing Day, where only two students from each county were recognized for their intent to pursue a two- or four-year degree in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field after graduating from high school. Upon graduation, he will attend the University of South Carolina to pursue a degree in biochemistry.
Moorer is a senior at the tuition-free virtual school, South Carolina Connections Academy.
In addition to being a student with autism, he has pursued his passions in stem cell research and has already made great accomplishments. Recently, he was invited as a guest for a lecture at the University of South Carolina due to his interest in stem cell research. Even more, at the age of five, he was invited to the Biochemistry lab at the University of South Carolina, and at only nine years old he was the first and only special needs student to be named Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
