Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Recognized for Environmental Stewardship in Lakeside Cleanup

The Rotary Club of Lake-Murray Irmo has been acknowledged by Keep Midlands Beautiful for its outstanding contribution to the Lakeside Litter Sweep event on Lake Murray in September 2023.

In collaboration with Interact student members from Dutch Fork High School, the Rotary Club spearheaded an impactful cleanup operation on Goat Island. Adding to the fervor of the initiative, Boy Scout Troop 312 from the Episcopal Church of St. Simon and St. Jude in Irmo, who were on a fall campout, enthusiastically joined the efforts.

The collective endeavor resulted in the removal of over 30 bags of trash from Goat Island, showcasing the dedication of the Rotary Club members, Dutch Fork High School students, and Boy Scout Troop 312. Noteworthy discoveries during the cleanup included a buoy and part of a sailboat rudder, underscoring the diverse range of debris that can affect waterways and natural habitats.

Jessica Granade, President of the Rotary Club of Lake-Murray Irmo, expressed immense pride in the collaborative efforts, stating, “We are immensely proud of our members and the youth from Dutch Fork High School and Boy Scout Troop 312 for their hard work and commitment to environmental conservation.” Granade emphasized that the recognition from Keep Midlands Beautiful is a testament to the power of community collaboration in effecting tangible change.

The cleanup event not only contributed to the physical improvement of Goat Island but also served as an educational experience. Participants gained insights into environmental stewardship, emphasizing the collective responsibility to uphold clean and healthy ecosystems.

Traude Saunders, Executive Director of Keep Midlands Beautiful, commended the group, saying, “We are very impressed with your work as your group continues to amaze us with your dedication.”
