McGregor Presbyterian Church is taking a proactive approach to addressing gun violence in the community by hosting a series of workshops in February and April. These workshops are a response to a gathering held in the Fall of 2023 where church members discussed ways to faithfully address the issue of gun violence. As a Christian community, McGregor is committed to valuing and preserving life, particularly the lives of young people.
The workshops aim to provide education and resources to the local community on various aspects of gun violence, including current legislation, gun safety, suicide prevention, and conflict resolution. The four workshops will feature speakers on specific subjects:
- Thursday, February 22: SC Gun Violence Statistics and Legislation with the SC Law Enforcement Officers Association and Police Chiefs Association.
- Thursday, February 29: Keeping Our Children Safe & Ways to Get Involved in Advocacy with Be SMART and Moms Demand Action-Midlands.
- Thursday, April 18: Talk Saves Lives with the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention- SC Chapter.
- Thursday, April 25: Alternatives to Violence with the SC Chapter of the Alternatives to Violence Project.
All workshops will take place at McGregor Presbyterian Church, located at 6505 St. Andrews Rd., Columbia, SC, starting at 6:00 p.m. The series is open to the public, and there is no admission fee. However, preregistration is required. To register, individuals can send their name, telephone/cell number, and email address to [email protected], specifying the date(s) of the workshops they wish to attend. Alternatively, interested participants can call the church office at 803-781-2391. This initiative reflects McGregor Presbyterian Church’s commitment to fostering a safer community and promoting informed discussions on gun-related issues.
