Nursery Road Elementary School-Arts Magnet (NRES-AM) has received a $10,000 Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) grant from the SC Arts Commission for the 4th consecutive year.
The ABC grant provides three years of support to schools and school districts committed to implementing standards-based arts curricula and to making the arts an integral part of the basic curriculum and daily classroom instruction.
“Receiving the Arts in Basic Curriculum grant for the 4th year in a row has continued to allow NRES-AM to fully support our vision of increasing student achievement through engagement and experiences in Media, Visual, and Performing Arts Integration,” said principal Love Ligons. “We were thankful to be awarded the funds even before receiving the Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) grant three years ago, which allowed our arts integration journey to begin even sooner. The monies are used each year to purchase supplies, materials, and experiences for our students in the arts which otherwise would not be possible.”
Nursery Road Elementary School-Arts Magnet is the only elementary school in Lexington-Richland School District Five to offer Media, Visual, and Performing Arts with an extended arts rotation as well as Arts Integration in the general education classroom.
ABC Advancement grantees, known as ABC sites, are part of the larger ABC Project, which is overseen by a steering committee of approximately 50 members including artists, educators, school administrators, representatives of higher education, business leaders and governmental representatives.
Among ABC Project programs and activities that support the efforts of ABC sites are 14 summer institutes for educators, including the Curriculum Leadership Institute in the Arts (CLIA), a summer arts leadership program for arts educators; the Arts Education Leadership Institute (AELI), an intensive summer planning program for school and school district teams; the SC Center for Dance Education at Columbia College; and an expanding statewide outreach program.
