Heather Ginn, Campaign Development Manger for Blood Cancer United (BCU), spoke to St. Andrews Optimists February 20. BCU is the new name for the older Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The research for causes and treatment of blood cancers began over 75 years ago, and at that time, the focus was entirely on leukemia. BCU, then, represents the next step in an evolution. In its history, BCU has invested over $2 billion in research. It has helped advance more than 70 percent of FDA blood cancer treatments since 2017. In 2024 by itlself, FDA approved six new treatment options.
A few facts about blood cancers:
- Every three minutes someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer
- Every hour, more than six patients lose their lives to one
- 40 percent of childhood cancer patients have a blood cancer
- One in four people diagnosed with a blood cancer never heard of BCU.
Only five percent of cancer drugs are approved for first use in children. This fact prompted the launch of the Dare to Dream Project, whose goal is to raise $175 million to develop safer, less toxic treatments specifically for kids. Further, in line with this Project, Prisma Children’s Hospital is a clinical trial partner intending to bring these treatments to local families.
It’s been said that when a blood cancer is diagnosed, the entire family becomes involved. BCU, free of charge, employs Patient Support Specialists who offer personalized guidance for every type of blood cancer. The specialists help families
- To understand the diagnosis
- To explore treatment options
- To apply for financial assistance
- To connect with emotional support
BCU has established a long-term goal of gaining more than a million years of life collectively for blood cancer patients through its ongoing efforts.
