After serving on the District Five Board of Trustees for 8 years, I have continued to follow our district – especially as my grandchildren attended our schools.
A lot of things have changed. Our taxes have increased, politics have entered some classrooms, our Irmo area school buildings have not kept up and our teachers are no longer the best paid in the Midlands. These are the board’s key responsibilities.
Catherine Huddle has fought to fix all of these issues. She and Ken Loveless led the charge to replace the old East Wing of Irmo High School. She voted to increase the funds for annual building maintenance by 50%, most of which has been targeted to Irmo area schools.
Catherine has a Finance degree and expertise. She fought the recent tax increases that led to bloated fund balances. She led the charge to increase teacher pay to match other Midlands districts, only to have the majority of the board vote no. That same majority voted to increase our property taxes. A vote for Catherine Huddle is a vote for a trustee that will do her job to ask tough questions, do her homework, communicate with constituents and use her expertise to carry out her duties. A vote for Catherine Huddle is a vote for students, teachers and taxpayers. If you live in Lexington County, I encourage you to use one of your two votes for Catherine – and the other for Ken Loveless.
