Before helping Dutch Fork win a fourth straight title for the second time in 10 years, defensive end Julian Walker made a memorable announcement on Signing Day.

For months, it appeared the Shrine Bowl selection was going to “Go Blue” with Michigan. He even paid a visit to Ann Arbor, Mich. during its season-ending matchup with archrival Ohio State.

As Walker entered the conference room at the Dutch Fork athletic facility, it was learned he was also having conversations with North Carolina and head coach Bill Bellichick.

When the time came to announce the choice, Walker had one more surprise in store.

In fact, it was hidden under his sweatshirt.

“At the end of the day, where I’ll be spending my next 3-4 years…the University of South Carolina!” said Walker to the loud cheers from surprised students and other observers.

In picking the Gamecocks, Walker acknowledged many “long nights” debating which school was the best fit. Ultimately, it came down to being “bought in” with what was offered by the coaching staff.

“I felt comfortable and I felt like this was the right decision for me being here with (defensive ends coach) Sterling Lucas, my father (Jamil Walker is a team strength and conditioning coach) being here,” Walker said. “This is a great staff that I’ve developed a great relationship with. I know these players on the team. They’re all my big brothers. It’s a great fit for me and that I feel comfortable continuing to build something at South Carolina.”

The 6-foot 5, 250-pound senior was the Silver Foxes’ leader in tackles (75) and sacks (25) this season. In the 40-20 state championship win over Summerville, he had six tackles, 3 ½ sacks and a 19-yard fumble recovery for his first career touchdown.

“Long and active edge defender that can cause plenty of issues up front given how he covers turf with his stride and energy,” said Andrew Ivins, Director of Scouting for 247Sports. “Could fit into both an odd or even front depending on how he fills into a frame that’s been verified at just over 6-foot-5, 250 pounds and has attacked from multiple alignments at prep level.

“Gets around offensive tackles by angling inside or outside as he’s frequently the superior athlete. Can also win with his snap anticipation and an adequate first step. Showcases surprising pop in the hands as he can swipe and ripe his way through blocks. Frequently affects passing lanes with those same levers.”
