Transparency on the Board

Dear Editor,

We read with interest the stories in your recent edition about the campaign announcements of the candidates for the District Five School Board of Trustees. At least two of the candidates pledged to be ’transparent’.

A few years ago the District Five Board was sued by Paul Osmundson of the State Newspaper for violating the SC Freedom of Information Act which requires all important matters to be voted on in open sessions. That case is still in our state courts.

Anyone interested can find that lawsuit online. It includes a lengthy and detailed affidavit of former trustee Ed White detailing under oath how the majority of the other trustees violated the FOIA with regard to the issues relating to the former district superintendent.

Transparency is indeed an important issue.
