Irmo voters opted for continuity Tuesday, November 4, re-electing incumbents Dr. Barb Waldman and Gabriel Penfield to the Town Council.
Waldman and Penfield secured the two available council seats, defeating challengers Benjamin Battiste, George Frazier, Adam Raynor and Brandon Mundy.
Unofficial results show Waldman receiving the most votes with 551. Penfield followed with 398, while Frazier collected 246. Mundy received 106 votes, Raynor 88 and Battiste 84. Frazier was the only challenger who previously ran for council, appearing on the ballot in 2023.
Voter turnout remained low, with fewer than 1,500 ballots cast in a town of nearly 12,000 residents.
“There was a lot of hard work and great support from the community,” Waldman said following the results. “Thank you, Irmo, and I’m excited to continue to serve you.”
Waldman, first elected in 2021, is a retired University of South Carolina faculty member. Both seats carry four-year terms. The town will ratify election results later this month, and the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for the December 16 regular council meeting.
